Once upon a time, concept cars were the crown jewels of auto shows. They existed as sleek sculptures of possibility, crafted in secrecy and unveiled under blinding lights before disappearing into storage or mythology. But today, some of the most radical concepts never see a stage at all. Instead, they debut in a video game.

In the past decade, automakers have found a new arena to flex creativity: the virtual worlds of Gran TurismoForza, and even Rocket League. These aren’t just cross-promotional gimmicks. They’re a genuine extension of automotive design, engineering, and marketing. The digital frontier has become a proving ground for ideas that are too wild, too advanced, or too expensive to build in the real world.

When Reality Takes a Backseat

It all started with Gran Turismo’s Vision Gran Turismo program. The concept was simple but revolutionary: invite the world’s top automakers to design their dream car without limits. No crash tests. No emissions rules. No budgets. Just pure imagination.

Mercedes-Benz kicked off the series in 2013 with the AMG Vision Gran Turismo, a hyper-aggressive coupe with proportions that seemed to defy physics. Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, and dozens of others followed. The result was a gallery of digital masterpieces that blurred the line between art and engineering.

Porsche’s designers described their Vision GT project as “a dream come true,” saying it allowed them to explore forms “far away from laws, regulations, or financial restrictions.” Jaguar went further, building a full-scale model of its Vision GT Coupé and later scanning it back into the game for players to drive.

Some of these cars exist only as pixels. Others, like the Bugatti Vision GT and Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision GT, were so striking that physical models were built for display. But even the ones that stay virtual are shaping the future of real-world design.


From Screen to Street

A few years ago, the idea that a car designed for a PlayStation game could inspire a production model would have sounded absurd. Yet that’s exactly what has happened.

The Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo, created for Gran Turismo 6, was such a hit that Bugatti built a 1:1 version for the Frankfurt Motor Show. It didn’t just look good; it looked familiar. Many noticed that its shape, vents, and C-shaped bodywork reappeared a year later on the Chiron. What began as a digital experiment became the DNA of Bugatti’s flagship hypercar.

McLaren took it a step further. In 2017, the brand revealed the Ultimate Vision GT, a wild, single-seat, jetfighter-inspired concept for Gran Turismo Sport. A few years later, it came to life as the Solus GT, a real 829-hp V10 track car limited to 25 units. The resemblance is uncanny. McLaren openly admits the Solus GT is “based on the 2017 Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo concept.”

Toyota’s FT-1 followed a similar path. It began as a virtual design exercise and made its debut in Gran Turismo 6. The overwhelmingly positive response helped convince Toyota to green-light a new Supra. When the fifth-generation Supra finally arrived in 2019, its lineage was unmistakable.

These examples reveal a feedback loop no one predicted: the virtual world is starting to influence reality.


The Game Before the Showroom

If concept cars are about testing the waters of imagination, production reveals are about commanding attention. And lately, carmakers have learned that nothing grabs attention like letting gamers drive the car before anyone else.

BMW was one of the first to experiment with this formula. In 2017, the brand unveiled the new M5 not at a car show, but inside Need for Speed Payback. Players could drive it virtually months before deliveries began. BMW’s marketing chief called it “modern marketing with benefits for everyone.”

Porsche followed suit. When Forza Motorsport 7 was announced at E3 2017, the spotlight wasn’t just on the game. It was on the world’s first public appearance of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, the most powerful 911 ever built. The partnership between Turn 10 Studios and Porsche was a watershed moment that showed gaming events could rival auto shows in influence.

Even non-racing titles have joined the trend. In 2022, Nissan introduced its new Z to millions of players through Rocket League, complete with esports tournaments sponsored by the brand. Ford dropped the Mustang Mach-E into the same game the year before, making it the first EV in Rocket League’s roster. These partnerships are a window into how brands are targeting digital-native audiences that might never read a traditional car magazine.

Why Automakers Love the Virtual World

The motivations go deeper than novelty. For designers, video games are a creative playground. They can test proportions, explore radical powertrains, and build cars that would be impossible in the real world. Porsche’s Vision GT project, for instance, gave designers freedom from every constraint short of imagination.

For marketing teams, the appeal is equally clear. Games reach younger, global audiences and provide instant data on what people respond to. Automakers can monitor how players drive their cars, which views trend online, and how communities react. It’s a massive real-time focus group that doubles as a hype machine.

And for fans, it’s pure wish fulfillment. They get to drive cars that don’t exist yet, sometimes before they’ve even been announced. The emotional connection that used to come from a poster on a bedroom wall now happens through a controller and a 4K screen.


When Fiction Inspires the Future

The most fascinating aspect of this trend isn’t the tech or the marketing. It’s how the digital world has started to inspire the physical one.

Design cues that once appeared only in video games are creeping into real models. Aerodynamic shapes from the McLaren Ultimate Vision GT, cockpit layouts from Jaguar’s Vision GT, and lighting signatures from Ferrari’s Vision Gran Turismo have influenced the real cars that followed.

Even engineering teams are beginning to use game technology as a design tool. Toyota’s Calty design studio used Gran Turismo’s physics engine to simulate the FT-1’s handling before it ever existed as a clay model. CEO Akio Toyoda virtually “test drove” it in the game, clocked a faster lap time than his real-world record, and gave the project the green light.

It’s a reminder that the line between simulation and reality is growing thinner every year.

The Games Leading the Charge

Gran Turismo remains the gold standard for automotive authenticity, but Forza has caught up fast with its mix of realism and accessibility. Both franchises are now official partners to automakers, helping them digitize new cars with CAD-level precision.

Meanwhile, Rocket League has turned digital showmanship into a marketing art form. It has hosted collaborations with Lamborghini, Ford, and Nissan, even turning cars into esports mascots. The game’s whimsical tone makes it an unexpected but effective platform for reaching millions of younger players.

And then there are the mobile giants like Asphalt and CSR2, which often get early access to hypercars like the Chiron or Lotus Evija. Each platform plays a role in shaping how the public experiences cars before they ever touch a road.

A New Kind of Concept Culture

Concept cars used to be a designer’s dream and a fan’s fantasy. Now they’re interactive experiences. The digital space has given automakers a way to take risks again, to try things that would never survive the corporate gauntlet of production approval.

The next great innovation might not come from a wind tunnel or a secret studio in Turin. It might start with a design rendered in Unreal Engine, tuned on a PlayStation, and tested by millions of players long before it ever leaves the screen.
